Course Overview
The Living Environment curriculum consists of ten units exploring different aspects of life. The units are:
Unit 1: Scientific Inquiry
Unit 2: Origins of Life
Unit 3: Introduction to Ecology
Unit 4: Organization and Patterns of life
Unit 5: Homeostasis and Immunity
Unit 6: Reproduction and Development (cellular, plants and animals)
Unit 7: Genetics and biotechnology
Unit 8: Evolution and Human Impact
Unit 9: Regents Review
Laboratory Requirement
Unit Requirements
On top of classwork, homework and labs; to pass each unit, a student must attain a “mastery” grade of 80% or above on both a Unit Exam and Performance Task. The Unit Exam is a traditional test comprised of Regents based questions. The Performance Task will assess the student’s ability to independently perform skills learned in the unit.
Mandatory Materials: By MONDAY 9/16/13, all students must have the following materials
-2” or 3” three ring binder
-500 pages of Loose-leaf paper
-Binder section dividers
-Plenty of pens and pencils
-Colored Pencils (optional, but helpful)
-Folder (optional, but helpful)
Classroom Rules
1) Respect and organize classroom and materials
- I will follow directions
- I will use all equipment appropriately and carefully
- I will keep the classroom clean
- I will not move desks
- I will remain seated
- I will put my bags on the back of my chair or under my desk
2) Be Polite
- I will not interrupt my teacher or peers
- I will participate in class discussions ONLY when I am called on
- When told, I will work in groups with other students
- Listen and speak thoughtfully
- Knock when you are late
- Maintain a low tone
3) Be prepared and be responsible
- I will be on time
- I know that homework is due at the beginning of class
- Every day I will enter quietly, place HW on my desk and start the Do Now immediately
- I will make up all work when I am absent
- I will not use personal electronics in class
- I will attend afterschool tutorial for test prep, lab makeup and test makeup
- I will bring a binder, lined paper and writing utensils EVERY DAY
- I know that I cannot take the Regents if I don’t complete lab hours
- No excuses, I will do my best work every single time
- I will show academic integrity, I understand that plagiarism will not be tolerated

Laboratory Requirement
- New York State requires that each student have 1,200 minutes (20 hours) of lab time with documented lab reports to sit for the Living Environment Regents exam.
- Lab reports must be kept on file in the classroom.
- If you do not fulfill the lab requirements you will not pass this course and will not be permitted to take the Living Environment Regents Exam in June.
